  • A BHS science teacher (class of '78) offers a tour: the new G and H buildings · Lee Trampleasure, 1997

well, actually I'm an imposter. I'm from the great class of '78. But I'm now teaching science at BHS, and would like to offer a tour of campus to any folks returning for the renuion. We opened the completely remodeled G building last year, and are opening the new H building this summer. Lots has changed since we were students. I'm also working on the BHS web page, and we are trying to create an online alumni database. If any of you have CGI experience and would like to help with this project, please drop me an email. Good luck with your reunion. Let me know if a group wants a tour (we'll only hit you up lightly for contributions!!) Lee Trampleasure

  • Brian Hardy, “exiled” to East Campus and graduating early · Brian Hardy, 2001

I was having a melancholy flashback and decided to put my search engine to work. 1977 seems so long ago. Actually, I graduated in 1976 by virtue of my exile to East Campus and an accelerated graduation (I still chuckle at my 10 credits to stop smoking), but I was originally a 1977 student before my favorate counselor Irene Obera dropped the boom on me for excessive truancy. Life's had its ups and downs but nowadays I'm fat and happy in Marin, growing old like the rest of you, but trying to stay young at heart. After BHS I worked as a disc jockey for a couple years in Monterey, then went back East for a spell and dug graves for a living, before finally coming home and falling into technology like everyone else. Today I'm a Systems Engineer and for whatever reason tonight decided to take my foray into the past and pay you a visit. I often think to myself that Berkeley in the 70's was so totally unique that we were all lucky to live the times. At any rate, thought I'd surface and say hello.

  • Jim McKinney on the 30th - and why Lafayette? · Jim McKinney, 2007

I've been looking forward to the 30th Reunion for some time, especially since I missed No. 25. I very much appreciate the work of the Committee to put this event together for the rest of us. Thank You! That said, am I the only one who thinks it's WIERD for a BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL class reunion to be held in the suburban town of LAFEYETTE? How did this happen? Is there no Berkeley restaurant able to host a party for several hundred? I mean, why stop in Lafayette? Come up to Davis and have it here! Clearly some very thoughtful people have worked hard to find a good venue. And I'll show up in Lafeyette if that's where it's at. But I think BERKELEY is where the BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL REUNION otta be. Now - For entertainment. Can we get Tower of Power to play? Earth Wind and Fire? Donna Summer? I heard she sang at a Governor's gig earlier this year. Oh - And please be sure to make the name tags with BIG print so that those of us with failing eyesight don't have to embarrass ourselves by squinting at someone's lapel trying to remember who in the heck they are - because they sure LOOK familar - even after 30 years of wear and tear and good livin'. Looking forward to this event. Cheers - Jim McKinney

  • A play about Berkeley High: “Yellowjackets” at UC Berkeley · Mark L. Williams, 2007

A play about Berkeley High!? Apparently so. I'm having quite the Berkeley afternoon, here in sweltering L.A. - watching Cal ahead (so far) of Tennessee in football, and as I go through mail, I open some U.C. stuff, to find out that a Berkeley High-reared playwright named Itamar Moses is getting a play called 'Yellowjackets' workshopped on the U.C. campus. This 'young man' was *born* in '77, and went to BHS, and then points east, became a playwright of some growing renown, and now has written a play about Berkeley High. And it's free! Sept. 15 at 8, or Sept. 16 at 2, in the Durham Studio Theatre at Cal. Did I say free? Q&A afterwards! There's more info online on the Cal Drama Dept's website (tho' I can't link from here...) You folks still on the auld sod, let us know how it is! Or what it is!

Hi Everyone! I'm glad I saw all of you at Lake Anza today. I suppose the shy & awkward me didn't walk up and say Hello to each of you, but it was a delight to see how we're all doing. I'm for a 35th. I don't care how big or small it is. My 11 year old broke out his little game computer and was a good sport being dragged to his dad's 30th year high school reunion. I found this site while looking for the e-mail address of Colleen White (Staggers) who logged on to Classmates.com. I am at IBM Research in Tokyo (over 21 years!). Luckily Japanese labor laws make it difficult to lay off regular employees and we have great national health insurance. I go home to Berkeley now 5 times or so a year since my parents are getting old. It'd be a blast to go to one of the reunions if it coinicdes with one of my trips.

What an interesting trip down memory lane--and how nice to see so many familar names. I promised James Reeves I'd contribute my info, so here it is in a nutshell: After juggling a day job and a career as an artist after Cal, I went back to grad school and got a Ph.D. in Art History. I'm now on the faculty at Santa Clara University in the Department of Art and Art History. SCU is right next door to San Jose and it is nice to be back in the Bay Area after living in Los Angeles for so many years. My companion of the last 18 (!) years is an architect with his own practice--still located in LA--so we trade off weekends in Northern and Southern California. I hope people keep contributing to this site, and Kudos to James for providing us with a place to meet in cyberspace. Finally, Phil Wright, if you are out there, drop me a line. --Andrea

It's 11 days past the reunion and I continue to think about it with a smile and a laugh. I asked my brother if he had a good time and he said, "the best part was watching you and Susan revert back to the giddy highschool girls you once were". I don't remember feeling giddy but I do remember the rush of memories, the excitement of seeing everyone and knowing I was smiling from ear to ear. Thanks to the committee for all the hard work and efforts. It was a fabulous evening, I enjoyed spending part of it with Mr. and Mrs. Parker. It made it extra special with them joining us. Sitting at their table, I was able to see people I may have missed and meet people I had never met in highschool. I am looking forward to helping with the 25th and seeing everyone again. We have a terrific class.

It was great fun to see old friends again and come up with those old '70's memories. I'm looking forward to the 25th!!! (P.S. Mindy, it was great fun talking with you last night!!!!)

As a committee member I can say that I was truly proud of what we were able to accomplish. It was so wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves. I want to personally thank my fellow commitee members for all of their hard work and effort, It paid off. I would also like to thank everyone who attended, because you were the one who really made it a success. I feel a little sad, I will miss our Saturday morning meetings. Looking forward to the 25th.. In the meantime my best wishes to all.

I had a great time at the reunion! I just wish it has lasted longer and I could have talked with more people. 20 years really does change people. Wow! If anyone wants to stay in touch just come by my store in Alameda. It's a great place to hang out on the weekend and get pastries and coffee and then go for a bike ride or walk along the waterfront. The name of my business is Why Cook? located in the Harbor Bay Landing shopping center just 2 miles from the Oakland airport. Now I know everyone has to go to the airport, so just stop on by!

How the years just melted away and everything seemed so deja'vu if only for a few short days (or was it just a few short hours?). The reconnections made with dear old friends, some lost for all these twenty years but not to be lost again. Thanks James, for making this event so hands-on and personal with this heartfelt web page (can't wait for the pics to show up!)...Hey Heidi, thanks for looking me up and making the trek back to Berkeley, bringing Gordy, Barb, Lori and Marg back too... the true highlight of this wonderful reunion!...Warren, my oldest friend, singlehandedly resposible for bringing me to BHS in the first place, still the same after all these years (thank goodness!)...Looking forward already to the 25th, how about we all redouble our efforts to bring the rest of the lost gang (John Heller?, Dan Shugrue?, George Doherty?)...better yet let's just crash the 1978 reunion...we'll probably find them there anyway! Well as we used to say on the steps...later...MUCH!! Alan Odom

Those who missed the reunion must be wondering if it was really that great. You know how many people like to exaggerate? Well like anything else in life it wasn,t perfect! In fact neither was the picnic! Who am I kidding? If you really want to know what it was like you had to be there and if you were you would have found that it was truly a great event!!! The only thing that kept it from being perfect were those we missed who didn,t show up. Don,t miss the 25th!!!

Hi all, just wanted to say that I really enjoyed myself at the reunion. It was great to see all of my old classmates(no pun intended). It made me feel very proud when a variety of professions were read off that some of us were presently holding. It also put things into perspective when Michelle gave the message that no matter what lifestyle, profession, condition, or esteem problems individuals were having that should not be a reason of not attending the reunion, because that isn't what it was about. This was a very true statement. In passing, I would run into a few fellow classmates that had these very same comments and felt that because of these reasons they were not going to attend. I can only say to them now, YOU MISSED A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EVENT!!! To James, I want to gave a BIG THANKS!! This site is just great. To the reunion committee members, Did We MAKE SUCCESS HAPPEN Or What???? All of those early Saturday morning mtgs. and online chat mtgs. DID payoff!!! To Marcus, those t-shirts were a knock-out(get-it??)!!! Last of all, I want to thank the spouses of the reunion committee. This is for all of the patience that you had during our crashing of your homes : · )) Let's all keep in touch. Who knows, maybe we will have a TEENS of THE 70's dance in the future!!!

I don't know where to begin? So many wonderful things happened for me at the reunion! Seeing so many old friends, so many old memories; and then to see how everyone has matured so much! What a different experience from the 10th reunion and also from high school. There was such a wonderful feeling of everyone coming together without a care in the world for what profession you were in or where you lived or what economic strata you fit into......there was such of feeling of larger community and family. It was wonderful. Of course, there were so many people that I didn't have a chance to talk to at any length, but that gives me more incentive to get back in touch with them now. Thank you, to everyone, who came and enjoyed the evening with all of us. It was truly worth every minute we put into organizing it. Thank you for providing such a warm, safe atmosphere, to be honest and open during my presentation. It is always easy to tell the truth when you speak from the heart! And a very special thanks to James Reeves, who has provided this web site for all of us to keep in touch. Without James.......the 20th reunion would have been a whole lot different for many of us! Thanks. And to everyone else, keep writing in!

To view twenty-four years in one's life in a few short hours, surounded by the new faces of old hearts, trying to say hi to all,not knowing who is missing, hidden or lost-who wrote the rules here? Wonderful is an understatement and fantastic is a downplay! Words will not work here, just hearts. I send to all of you my love for yoiu have passed the test of time, grown from rags to riches, polished in all the right places, It meant so much to see all your smiling faces. THE REUNION WAS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EVENT THAT I WOULD NOT HAVE MISSED FOR THE WORLD, BUT I ALMOST DID. IF NOT FOR THE FACT THAT I HAD A BABY SHOWER FOR MY WIFE ON THE VERY SAME DAY,AT THE VERY SAME HOTEL, AS THE REUNION,I WOULD NEVER HAD KNOWN.IF I HAD KNOWN EARLIER I WOULD HAVE TRIED TO LOSE WEIGHT AND GROW HAIR FOR THE EVENT :] . . . IT WAS STRANGE TO SEE ALL MY CHILDHOOD FRIENDS AS ADULTS. IN MY HEAD THEY LIVED ON AS I LAST SAW THEM. LOOKING AROUND THE ROOM I REALIZED THAT THESE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT SHAPED ME INTO THE PERSON I AM TODAY.I ONLY WISHED THE REUNION WAS LONGER...IF ANYONE WANTS TO CONTACT ME I'M AT HABNFUN@FLASH.NET {FYI HABNFUN ARE ALSO MY PERSONALIZED PLATES :]...

I'd like to echo Kirsten's comments... I had a great time this weekend and a chance to renew and make new friends. I'll be working on additions to the site soon, but first I need to recover! The one thing I know has changed is that I can no longer party as hard as I used to! Please check back here in the next few weeks for important reunion followup messages and information. Thanks to everyone that has made the reunion and this website a great experience... it really made me feel good to know how much people had appreciated this website... At the party I had several conversations that went like this, (leaning over, squinting at name tag) "Joe/Jane Smith! I remember you!" - "Hi, Scott... I remember you..." - Weren't we in Mr. Jones history class together?" - "Didn't take his class." - "King Jr. High?" - "I went to Willard" - "Hmmm..." Well, after one of these conversations with CARLA ARNOLD, and some head-scratching and year-book checking, I've figured out that we met freshman year at university (the one with palm trees and red tile roofs). There were only a handful of BHS grads in that class. -- Scott

Here we are the day after, and I would like to thank all of you who braved it enough to show up. After being completely out of touch for 20 years, it was a wonderful experience to see people and renew friendships. Prior to attending, I had honestly felt that it was not important that I attend, and that those years ago meant nothing in my current life. After the last two days, I feel that attending was a transcendental experiece. This will sound completely cliche, but that's ok: renewing these friendships allowed me to feel part of a larger community, of course brought the proverbial "closure" home to many old friendships, and also made me feel very happy and proud to see how everyone (including myself) has not only matured, but is a success in their own way. Thanks again, and I'll definately attend for number 25!

Best Wishes to all going this weekend... although I am unable to be there, I have enjoyed catching up people and plan to call upon some of you when I do make my next visit home - and home it will always be... Berkeley is a special place - one we can feel lucky and proud to have experienced at that moment in its history and as part our personal life journies. This weekend is for celebrating our pasts, friends and those high school experiences captured as vivid memories - things which conrtibute in many ways to who we are today. Enjoy the time together and the opportunity to reflect.

We've been out 20 years already? Wow, how time flies. Anyway, I recently injured my back and, as a result, I will not be at the 20th reunion. I had planned to be there and am very disappointed I won't make it now. Twenty year old "hellos" to any BHS friends that still remember me! If anyone wants to get in touch, my home phone number is 303 499-6717. The rest of my family is still in the Berkeley area and I usually visit about once a year. I guess I should mention that I'm still single (but in a long term relationship) and am employed as a biochemical engineer working on biofuels production at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. How sad to see the "In Memory" site. A big dose of mortality, yes? Just found your site tonight, was unaware of the reunion. Countess Williams told me about it ont he telephone tonight. I have to fly down to LA on Thursday, and hope to have dinner with her and catch up. Don't think I will be able to attend the reunion at such late notice, but it was very nice to read everyone else's virtual commments in the guest book. Sounds as though many of you have not left the bay area. I love to travel, but always enjoy coming home. Even with all the changes (the traffic!!!), we still enjoy stunning vistas, weather, food and adventure. Enjoy the reunion!

Who????? made up all of those names mentioned by Matt Watson? Matt, Jeff Houston, and John Laetsch were the quick minds behind some of these mostly benign creations. I'm not sure many people will recognize all of them--any clues?. In fact, I've never heard of Chimney, Peli, Kagdog, and Snappy (or were you just making those up to fill-in a few lines?). And, wasn't Magnet Back a generic name for a fish? Any additional names? We'll be thinking of you in Emeryville from this dusty part of I-80. Hope everyone has a a good time.
