  • A BHS science teacher (class of '78) offers a tour: the new G and H buildings · Lee Trampleasure, 1997

well, actually I'm an imposter. I'm from the great class of '78. But I'm now teaching science at BHS, and would like to offer a tour of campus to any folks returning for the renuion. We opened the completely remodeled G building last year, and are opening the new H building this summer. Lots has changed since we were students. I'm also working on the BHS web page, and we are trying to create an online alumni database. If any of you have CGI experience and would like to help with this project, please drop me an email. Good luck with your reunion. Let me know if a group wants a tour (we'll only hit you up lightly for contributions!!) Lee Trampleasure

  • Brian Hardy, “exiled” to East Campus and graduating early · Brian Hardy, 2001

I was having a melancholy flashback and decided to put my search engine to work. 1977 seems so long ago. Actually, I graduated in 1976 by virtue of my exile to East Campus and an accelerated graduation (I still chuckle at my 10 credits to stop smoking), but I was originally a 1977 student before my favorate counselor Irene Obera dropped the boom on me for excessive truancy. Life's had its ups and downs but nowadays I'm fat and happy in Marin, growing old like the rest of you, but trying to stay young at heart. After BHS I worked as a disc jockey for a couple years in Monterey, then went back East for a spell and dug graves for a living, before finally coming home and falling into technology like everyone else. Today I'm a Systems Engineer and for whatever reason tonight decided to take my foray into the past and pay you a visit. I often think to myself that Berkeley in the 70's was so totally unique that we were all lucky to live the times. At any rate, thought I'd surface and say hello.

oops, I forgot! Yes, Kim [Burgess-Duckett]. I do remember the wall, the track, and the gym (gymnastics). We had good times. Renita, Annette, and I talk about them all the time. Big shout outs to people that I haven't heard from in years: Manjit, Storrie, Aleso, Yvonne Hester (has anyone seen her?), Mary Conyers, Rhonda Aubrey, Lynda Fenton-Foster, and James Foster

  • Jim McKinney on the 30th - and why Lafayette? · Jim McKinney, 2007

I've been looking forward to the 30th Reunion for some time, especially since I missed No. 25. I very much appreciate the work of the Committee to put this event together for the rest of us. Thank You! That said, am I the only one who thinks it's WIERD for a BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL class reunion to be held in the suburban town of LAFEYETTE? How did this happen? Is there no Berkeley restaurant able to host a party for several hundred? I mean, why stop in Lafayette? Come up to Davis and have it here! Clearly some very thoughtful people have worked hard to find a good venue. And I'll show up in Lafeyette if that's where it's at. But I think BERKELEY is where the BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL REUNION otta be. Now - For entertainment. Can we get Tower of Power to play? Earth Wind and Fire? Donna Summer? I heard she sang at a Governor's gig earlier this year. Oh - And please be sure to make the name tags with BIG print so that those of us with failing eyesight don't have to embarrass ourselves by squinting at someone's lapel trying to remember who in the heck they are - because they sure LOOK familar - even after 30 years of wear and tear and good livin'. Looking forward to this event. Cheers - Jim McKinney

  • A play about Berkeley High: “Yellowjackets” at UC Berkeley · Mark L. Williams, 2007

A play about Berkeley High!? Apparently so. I'm having quite the Berkeley afternoon, here in sweltering L.A. - watching Cal ahead (so far) of Tennessee in football, and as I go through mail, I open some U.C. stuff, to find out that a Berkeley High-reared playwright named Itamar Moses is getting a play called 'Yellowjackets' workshopped on the U.C. campus. This 'young man' was *born* in '77, and went to BHS, and then points east, became a playwright of some growing renown, and now has written a play about Berkeley High. And it's free! Sept. 15 at 8, or Sept. 16 at 2, in the Durham Studio Theatre at Cal. Did I say free? Q&A afterwards! There's more info online on the Cal Drama Dept's website (tho' I can't link from here...) You folks still on the auld sod, let us know how it is! Or what it is!

It's been wonderful reading these messages! Kent McQue...my first kiss...Longfellow School! Was experiencing a bit of trepidation around coming to the reunion and I'm showing up! Been working on situps for the past several weeks hoping to flatten and firm up the stomach, oh well..... know I'll firm it up through my work on the dance floor! Showing up single so looking for dance partners! Thanks again to the committee for all of your work. Looking forward to enjoying the fruits of the labor with you all! p.s. Tony (BB) Summers thinks I should get the 'most changed award' this year! Am completing my first year in ministerial school....gonna be a 'new thought/metaphysical' minister. What a trip!!! • Kevin Vance, the day of the 30th reunion picnic at Lake Anza · Kevin Vance, 2007

Hi Everyone! I'm glad I saw all of you at Lake Anza today. I suppose the shy & awkward me didn't walk up and say Hello to each of you, but it was a delight to see how we're all doing. I'm for a 35th. I don't care how big or small it is. My 11 year old broke out his little game computer and was a good sport being dragged to his dad's 30th year high school reunion. Keep the Cheetos and the Pepsis. best, Kevin Vance, the guy in the green, black & red frog shirt, recovering Willard stoner and BHS class-cutter (to work at KPFA)

I found this site while looking for the e-mail address of Colleen White (Staggers) who logged on to Classmates.com. I am at IBM Research in Tokyo (over 21 years!). Luckily Japanese labor laws make it difficult to lay off regular employees and we have great national health insurance. I go home to Berkeley now 5 times or so a year since my parents are getting old. It'd be a blast to go to one of the reunions if it coinicdes with one of my trips.

Class of '77 0ne of the great classes of BHS during my teaching years! Do you remember taking Criminal Law? Did those exams kick your butt or what? But it was still a good class, right? Hope all yo out there are doing well. I'm traveling a lot doing volunteer work in National Parks and Forests, building trails, in Yosemite, Alaska and making beautiful places better like Macchu Pichu, Chile, Palestine and Afghanistan. Just got back from Croatia hunting truffles and mushrooms. Good life.

Hello, All! I grew up in Berkeley, CA which is where I met most of you, while attending Washington Elementary, King Junior High, West Campus, then moved to North Oakland and attended and graduated from Oakland Technical High School in 1977. Growing up, we lived at 1713 Dwight Way, where I recall some friends, like Kim Burgess, Countess Williams (it's a miracle I can recall these names) Lisa Felix, Usana Smith, Curtis (Nakamura?), from elementary school. I was a member of McGee Avenue Baptist Church for about 100 years (until I left for New York in 1999). Presently, I live in New York, NY (Harlem). Eventually, I will work my way back to the Bay (Area). Still pursuing my dreams :). My daughter graduated from Berkeley High in 1997 and is now living in Oakland. Eventually, I will settle down there; for there is no place like the Bay Area! Good, bad or indifferent, there is no place like it! If anyone knows Kim Burgess or Countess, please let them know I'm looking for them. Thanks and maybe I'll see you at the next reunion. Shout-outs to all of you! Please feel free to email me. God bless!

BHS Class of 1978 Reunion (August 23, 2008) Hi All: I went to Longfellow, King, Willard & BHS, grew up in Berkeley (Dwight Way & Allston Way)and went to church in Berkeley for 34 years (Mc Gee Avenue Baptist Church) but I graduated from continuation school at Castlemont (Knight School). I remember all of my childhood friends: Angie Manning, Roy Stone, Terrance Aikens, Donald Sally, Nedra Martin, Beverly Green, Jackie Richards, Kenny Epps, Joy Carter, Harold Watkins and of course, Sharon Samuels (hey gurl!!!) I recently saw Roy Stone and met his beautiful wife, Carmen. I had dinner last night with Anthony Howard from Berkeley High class of '78. He looks absolutely marvelous and has arms the size of my thighs!!! ;-) I am looking forward to attending the Class of '78 reunion in August 2008 and seeing my old friends. I have lived in Alameda for 16 years and I was in law enforcement for 17 years. I am currently a Human Resources Manager and it is certainly my passion. If anyone has contact info for the class members of BHS '78, there is a yahoo group set up.

I haven't received any pictures from anyone from the reunion. I didn't take any pictures myself ... so until someone sends me some, there wont be any.

When do we get to see pics from the 30th reunion? I just started a new catering business and had to do a conference that weekend. ( Maybe I can cater the next reunion since there seemed to be a problem with the food). But seriously I would really like to see some pics posted. Hope to make the next one.

I was also shocked at the locale for our reunion, given the price charged per person. The bar service was non-existent, and water was never served. We were told that there were not enough seats for everyone to sit on while dining, and the server who monitored the buffet was directing us as to the quantity of food to place on our plates. I understand that not everyone has the same financial means, but surely we could have gotten a better deal for our money elsewhere. Having said that, I was happy to reunite with old friends.

It was so nice to see so many of my living friends enjoy reuniting. I just can not figure out why it was held in a rinky dink restaurant bar in Lafayette. Seventy bucks each for the most pathetic stand in line dinner with no formal tables? Can we get some bar service up in here, Please? And I thought I was in hell. How about the Claremont Hotel for the 40th? It's located in Berkeley of all places. Then we can enjoy several bars, enjoy the view, and enjoy crashing our drunk asses in a hotel room without having to drive.

Well, all you lovely people, I am sorry to miss it. I have had my bookish weekend here in SoCal, which involved Orange County-reared cheerleaders flying unexpectedly through the air during book readings, etc., but never mind that. I did catch up with local BHSer Conrad Hurtt ('78), who is working on the next class' reunion, and perhaps I will have to go to their picnic by way of compensation. Unless we have some postscript-like holiday nog gathering later this year. Otherwise, on to the next one! May we continue to prosper in this mad century of ours... And hey, any similarly expatriated Yellowjackets here in the southland, give a holler...

Glad to see postings from folks I haven't seen for quite some time, like Brad Allen, Paul Lecky, Tom Klatt, Larry Becker, Connie Lim. I've been able to touch bases with Alan Kamada, David Commins, David Sakurai, Reggie Johnson. Hard to believe we are all getting so old!

Thanks Dennis Brown, for keeping me informed of all the future plans for the 30th, witch are now going to take place in two days, but unfortunately I can't get away from work, but I will make it to the picnic. I hope I could 'hook up' with some o'l buddies there. It's funny, my brother came up from LA to attend his 50th just this past summer,BHS re-union, and my older son had just started BHS, freshman, this year 'How Time Flies' It's amazing the places I have ran into BHS alumnis over the years, Las Vegas AV area during an Electronics convention, small town near North Shore, Hawaii, my wife's classmate in Japan, and the less fortunate in the streets of our neighboring city. We truly have a diverse class. Thanks again to the reunion committee for all their time and effort to make this happen.

Hey Class of '77! Congrats on your 30th!! I remember many of you, as I am from the Class of '78. With a son in the class of '09, I am now the co-president of the BHS Development Group , a 501(c)3 nonprofit group of parent volunteers who raise and distribute money for Berkeley High. We fund or contribute to after school tutoring by teachers, 1st Step scholarships for students who are the first in their families to go to college, the Ultimate Frisbee team, the Mountain Bike team, the cheer squad and MANY other activities/field trips/projects. The Class of '47 had their 60th reunion this year and raised $4600 for us--I challenge you to better them and set the standard for my class to try to beat next year! BHS is in the process of regaining its national reputation (we moved up almost 100 spots in 1 year on the top 1,500 high schools list in Newsweek Magazine. Please support BHS! Hope to see you at the picnic!

Hello to the class of 77 (plus 76 & 78)! I don't think I can make this one due to a conflicting work schedule. I hope life is good for everyone as we begin to hit the half century mark. The great thing about the 25th reunion for me was that it triggered memories that have been buried and pack away for a long time. Of course, through the lens of time, the memories have taken on a more favorable tone. I still recognize a lot of the names - Larry Becker, John Latesch, Matt Watson and his lovely wife, Mindy Scharlin, Joseph Lindholm, et al. Many of these people probably also attended Malcom X and Williard (remember West Campus?) but it does start to get blurry the further back I go. Well, my daughter and son are in high school now and I guess I get live it over again but from the perspective of my parents (the irony of it all). Mindy Scharlin, I am glad to hear you are doing well. I think we go back as far as Malcom X? Play Earth Wind and Fire for me (That's the way of the world) and I will thinking of all you in spirit! Take care,

Funny thing, I was in the underground papers talking about Kid's Liberation when I was his age. We can all laugh about the old days, and the new days, as well as how much grey hair and weight we've gained or lost, and the beach is a perfect place for that. luv, Kevin PS: if interested, write me for a link to my myspace thing. Since I will not be able to attend the 30th reunion, I wanted to say HELLO to my BHS friends! Although I have lived in western Nevada for 25 years, Berkeley (the verb) remains in my heart. It was a special time in history and a special school that has affected the arc of my story, for sure. My degree in nutrition from UCB has served me well and I continue to work in and study the field. I have become somewhat of a nutrition advocate and all around pacesetter in these parts. My husband and I are still in the midst of raising teenagers, a full experience. One son decided to attend a the Davidson Academy of Nevada, a new public high school for profoundly gifted students. Families are moving here from around the country to attend this school, so I thought I would put this out, just in case anyone is looking into this. I am happy to be here now and send my blessings to you.

I have a business meeting in Minneapolis that weekend so I can't come to the reunion this time around. I would have liked to come out for the 30th since I missed the 25th since it was held just after I moved to Boston. I am sure it will be a blast - please tell everyone hello that remembers me - and for those of you that remember my big announcement at the 20th reunion, I am alive and well and very healthy. Last year I celebrated 10 years of survival post cancer. I am truely one of the 'lucky ones' and I feel grateful and blessed to be alive each day. It is nice to see all the names and messages from people who are signing the Guest Book. Glad to see Mr. J.

I feel reallly awkward asking this, but after talking to a friend on the committee, it was suggested I sort-of ask for help with this: I really want to be able to make it to the dinner as well as the picnic, but being on a fixed income, all I can really afford is amtrak and the cost of the dinner, which would rule out a hotel stay cost-wise, so if anyone has an available couch for that night? (whew, that was hard to get out). Thanx. :) OR- if anyone is coming down from Davis for a carpool maybe?

See the main page for details. Also, please register your name in the online registration so we have your most up-to-date contact information. Its a real pain to manually update this information so it helps a lot if you use the online system.

While I understand the desire to have the reunion in Berkeley, I want to discourage complaints about where the event is being held as it's not a constructive use of energy. The committee did the best we could with the limited time we had to pull together a reunion event, while also trying to keep the costs down. The most important thing seems to be to reunite and celebrate together in the same room, particularly since we're now spread out across the Bay Area and beyond anyway. Thanks for understanding.

Well, dang. I missed the 25th due to that being my "summer of divorce" (is this the antithesis of a "Summer of Love?"), and now the 30th comes... on the same weekend I have back-to-back bookfest appearances down here! I am still writing books for young readers on the march, and I'd obliged myself to these two fests some months in advance. Sigh. Well, have a splendid time everyone. Does this mean on to the 35th? Or the 40th? Or do I get too far ahead of myself...?

Hi everybody, Life is very busy, as I'm sure it is for you too, so we were slow to start the planning for the 30th reunion. But, we've got it going for Sept. 29 & 30 and we hope to see you there. Please be sure we have your address and email so we can send you the details (also keep checking the website for updates). Hats off and much appreciation to James Reeves for keeping the site live all this time. He's a jewel and we thank him for his expertise and efforts, which are really really helpful and needed. And thanks to the rest of the committee, too. Looking forward to seeing all of you soon. To those that can't be there, we know you'll be with us in spirit. Hope life has been good for you and your families. Blessings, Michelle

Hope everyone has a wonderful 30th. Can't attend this one. Did the 10th and the committee work, with Mindy (hey, Mindy-Mind), Sunshine, Willa, Dennis, Chris -- all of you! We had such a great time, with our gettogethers at each others' homes, camping trip and swimming, carving our school and graduating year (BHS '77 -- YEAH!) on a picnic table, and posing for pics in the bleachers at BHS, yes? We were 27ish then and, wow, I thought I'd live in the Bay Area forever. My family's still there, so we visit, but Tod, the kids and I now are in Chicagoland. Wishing we could be there; we'll be thinking of you all. In the meantime, I'm with James: Only 500-sumpthin' days of Bush remaining.... :)

More wist! More rumination and sensation of time utterly flying! Here I was, checking in as a run-up to next year's putative 30th reunion, and in scanning the "recent" messages, came upon my own post from... 2003! It's been a fast three years... I'm still writing columns and books (on my 5th "Danger Boy" book now, actually), still divorced, still missing Northern Cali, but mostly, still raising my two own "danger boys", now 12 and 7. Would love to hear from any BHS/School of the Art folk similarly expatriated to this large town south of Bakersfield...

Amazingly I found my old yearbook in a box under the house. (OK, I am a sentimental pack rat and proud of it.) Lots of nice memories in there! I am sad to not have found anything yet on the web about what is going on with Class of '76. However, I am very glad to see that Class of '77 is going strong. Quickly summerizing almost 30(!) years of history: after graduating, earned B.S in Electrical Engineering at Howard University in Washington, DC... spent 6 years in Cambridge, MA earning Ph.D. in same at MIT... moved to New York, working in investment banking... fell in love (for the umpteenth time :-)), got married, have two young children (daughter, 7; son, 3). I'm back home about 6 times a year... questioning why I ever left... Phew... There's actually more to the story, but no room here. i ran into a fellow in gerlach, nevada by the name of tressiter. claims to know several people there at bhs class of 1977 including andy hess. tressiter said he is extremely proud to be a clunker, but he does not know how to sing clunker song. i never understood how one could be very proud to be a clunker and not know clunker song. perhaps someone there at the reunion group can get ahold of that jail-bird andy hess and ask if he can teach tressiter clunker song. by the way-there is a great little restaurant there in gerlach, nevada called bruno's country club. anyone going to the burning man should stop in at bruno's and ask for tressiter. ask if that convicted felon andy hess has been able to teach trressiter clunker song. and if you are ever in my neighborhood of eastern utah on interstate 70, stop into my hometown of thompso (about 30 minutes west of colorado) and look me up. only about 30 of us live here so everyone knows me. i can tell you more about tressiter and let you in on some prison stories about andy hess

Just thought I'd write a note to remind people that this site is mostly automated ... the best way to make sure that your contact information is known so the reunion will find you for the next one is to register your name on this site. The registration is straight-forward and takes only a few minutes. Simply go to the Registration page and click on the link to Add Your Contact information. If you are already registered and want to update your information, find your name in the list and click on your last name. From there you can enter your password to get into the record. If you forgot the password, click on "forgot Password" and enter your email address, the system will send it to you via email. If that all fails, send me an email (use the link on the site) and I can help. Writing your name in this guestbook will *NOT* insure you are notified via email about the reunion. Hope all is well with everyone in BHS land!

Hey fellow BHS graduates. This board has been very quiet. Doesn't it seem like the years are just flying now? I am trying to grow old "gracefully" and it is always fun taking a short trip through memory lane - High School. Why are those 3 years so significant in one's life? I don't know but I guess it is considered one of many milestones in our journey. I don't have any pearls of wisdom, but I have found that trying to let go of my ego, has led me to become more content and humble. Caring about other people (family and friends) will invevitably bring more joy and happiness. Happy Holidays to all and lets wish for Peace in 2005.

It seems to me that some people have not experienced too much personal growth since high school. This Kolya Renne person had no idea of what Philip Agretelis could have become or what he was like when he passed away (so tragically early in life). I remember him in kindergarten. I also remember Abby Bellah. Life is a gift and some people don't get as long of a chance. Here is to hoping that people keep working at compassion. There is enough war, violence, and mean spirit in this world.

Phil Agretelis died in an inner-tubing accident on a river near Chico State while in college there. The year was 1983, I believe...a long time ago. He was with his fiance.....he was going down a rapid, went under, and never came up. Very, very sad. He was a neat guy who never got to see how is life would turn out. He is missed by many of us.

I attended Berkeley schools until 8th grade (Willard Jr High was a jungle) then my family thankfully sent me to a small private school. When I see the pictues of porn skag Nina Hartley (text editied) its pretty amazing that people can be so accepting on one level but not on another.

This site is really fun! And it's growing by leaps and bounds! Everytime I look at it there are new contributors. There is something reassuring about visiting the past, hearing from old friends. On the other hand, I have to ask myself (and the rest of you out there): do you really think you're going to have anything in common with people you knew when you were teenagers? Most of us have evolved into different human beings. I look at pictures and entries from people here, and I just see a bunch of middle-aged people I happened to be stuck in the same school with, 25 years ago. I don't have much in common with these aging strangers. I have kept in touch with select individuals, and the rest ... I wish them the best of luck, but couldn't really care less about seeing them again. I'm sorry if I sound negative.

I just came across a story about Paul Alarab, who died last month in a fall from the Golden Gate Bridge. Here is a link to the article . Paul was a friend of mine in high school and I remember playing guitar with him various times at his house on the hill down to Tilden.

Suki died last year in May, after living with Breast Cancer for eight years. There was never a memorial service for her in the Bay Area. Her brothers, Nick and Eric Stern, are organizing one to be held on May 31, 2003, noon - 4pm, site to be announced later. Eric and Nick are also looking for pictures and remembrances of her, for a memorial booklet. They were looking for these items to be sent to them by April 1st, which is next week. I know this is extremely short notice. If anyone would like to attend the service and/or has photos or memories of Suki that they would like to share, they can email Eric (who was called Arthur in high school) at estern @ rceb.org or to Nick at yelsub99 @ yahoo.com. thanks for your help, Julie

Of course I left BHS in the middle of my Junior year (the first time the equvalency test was offered. If memory serves, Bruce Welton jumped ship at the same time - Anyone heard from him?)Then I didn't get into Cal until 1982, so pretty much lost contact a lot of people. Since 2000 I've been Bird and Small Mammal Keeper at the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Texas - Capybaras, Patagonian Cavies, Von der Decken's Hornbills, King Vultures, Collie's Magpie Jays, etc. (My wife works with large dangerous stuff - Rhinos, Lions, Giraffes... We met at the Fort Worth Zoo where I worked in the bird department and meddled in the aquarium for seven years). Great to see what's been going on with Stacey Starkweather, Wei Huey, and William Kumai. Hope Zerda is much better! Best Wishes to All.

Graduation song, "How time flies" By George Benson, not the O'Jays (just ask songbird Lynda, "Hi Lynda!")Plus it could not possibly be the class of '77 without the elements....Earth, Wind and FIRE (can I get an Amen out there!) Well I've made a few changes to the Guestbook so I thought I'd better write a comment myself to test it :-) I want to say thanks to everyone for thanking me for my work on the website. It is nice to hear that this site has become so helpful to people in reconnecting with old friends. I enjoy keeping up the site which keeps me connected with everyone as well. Its a fun hobby and knowing that its helping the BHS community is a real bonus! Thanks again. I personally had a really good time at the reunion. It felt a little less pressured than the last for me, I think everyone as they mature are taking life a little slower and more relaxed. Its really strange to think of those days sitting on "The Steps" and wasting away the days (at least for me) ... it wasn't until a few years after high school that it really hit me to get my act together and growup. Now with my oldest, the same age as I was when I met Ellen, I am so happy to see that he is interested in school and adapting so much better than I did at the time. I also want to thank the other reunion committee members for all their hard work and time put into the arrangements: believe me, its not easy to organize and plan all the details and make sure it all comes together. I had very little to do with that part of the reunion and the committee really deserves a lot of credit. I had a great time catching up with old friends and looking forward to the next one!

Thanks to you all, committee and classmates, for making the 25th reunion events such a success, including those of you that couldn't come but signed the virtual guest book (thanks to James). I've been involved in planning all 3 and feel this was one of the best. Thanks to all who came from near and far (William Kumai won the farthest from Japan!). Whether you're single, married once or multiple times, have a whole tribe of kids or none at all, are grandparents (or even greats?), successful entrepreneurs, or doing the same ol thing ... we love you all. The diversity and pioneer times we grew up with in Berkeley are treasures. Keep the momentum moving ... keep in touch with each other, support each other, and keep being EXACTLY who you are! We all make a postive difference in the world!!! See you next time!

Greetings! The 25th reunion was great! The next morning, my wife asked me (jokingly) whether I spoke with any old girlfriends from high school. Well, no girlfriends in high school...that was not part of my high school experience :( but I told her I did see some great people from my past - Michael Poe and his lovely wife, you are still quite the gentleman; Larry Becker, still humble as ever, we all can learn a bit of humility from you; Matt Watson and Marie Parker, what a handsome couple!; Storrie Kliot, it took a few minutes but I do remember you and your sister, it was great talking to you; Alan Odom, still got that million dollar smile; Anthony Hill, the original Mr. Nice Guy; William Kumai, smart as ever; Connie Lim, a person who always had a smile or a kind word for everyone; Michelle Coleman, where did you get so much charm?; Mitzi Hartman, thanks for reminding us how special it was, and is, to be part of the Berkeley experience, where acceptance, not just tolerance, of diversity is the norm; Wanda La Protti, still as pretty as I remembered; Jon Taylor, my best friend in high school and still one of the most INTERESTING people I know! Thanks to everyone for making the night a special one and I hope to see you all again 5 years from now. I am sorry I had to miss the picnic. I am sure that was fun as well. Take care, Wei Huey

Hi All! I can't believe I'm not making it to the reunion. We are out of town. (Erin, your posting prompted me to write.) I, too, keep my radio locked to 98.1! My husband has tried to convince me that good songs have been written in the last 25 years, but I know better!! Anyway, I live the typical suburban life. I've been married for 16 years and we have 3 beautiful boys, ages 12, 10 and 8. They keep us busy and we have lots of fun! I help run a family foundation in Walnut Creek which is very fulfilling work. I'm still in touch with Terri Verhoeff (who is living in Fullerton with two children) and Dominique Schurman and Susan Yamagata (both class of 1978). They are in Danville. Anyway, as I said, I'm sorry to miss the reunion and send a huge "thanks" to the reunion committee for all their hard work. Have a great time and I look foward to reading "post-reunion" comments.

Hi, all-- I likewise had been assuming -- for about five years! -- that I was going to make this reuniuon, but a confluence of various life crises, and the need to stay in L.A. for a job (of the temporary sort, being showbiz connected) that starts early in the Monday A.M., have conspired to keep me here, in a town south of Bakersfield. On the parenting side, two loving boys to show for my life's journey, to date (8 and 3), and on the career side, have even found my way into print as a children's book author -- the "Danger Boy" series, for middle grade readers. It's a time travel series, partially set (of course) in the Bay Area... a switch of publishers has delayed the third installment, which will actually give me time to write it! I still get back to Berkeley once or twice a year, and am still in touch with dear pals that go back all the way to Cragmont! I, too, ask for copious picture taking and posting, so I can virtually attend the 25th. Had a gas (can we still talk like that?) at the 10th & 20th...may the wind (coming off the Bay?) be ever at your collective backs, etc. Hollers, Mark Williams

Dear Friends and Classmates: I won't be able to attend the 25th Reunion because it's my 5th wedding anniversary and my wife and I have had long-standing plans. I had such a kick at the 10th Reunion, mostly seeing what an interesting group of adults we have become. I took growing up in Berkeley for granted: diversity, creative thinking, progressive values, women's rights, caring about ideas, issues and the arts. Wrongo!! These are rare and precious commodities in the rest of the world. So. A brief update on my life. I've been doing environmental work for my career, and am now at the California Energy Commission serving the public's interest. Got a Public Policy degree from Cal along the way. Traveled extensively through Europe, Alaska and South Pacific, and lived in Europe for several years. Love the wilderness. Used to play guitar and bass. Happily married to a New Englander, although no kids yet. Lost my mother and brother recently. At the Reunion, I'd seek out the folks from the Jacket, Yearbook, sports teams (swimming, water polo and crew), and my old neighborhood haunts to see how everyone is and what they have done with their lives. Take lots of pictures - and label them! Be sure to play lots of Earth Wind and Fire and Tower of Power. Best Regards to all. I hope to make the next one - Jim

When I think about the 25 years that have passed; I feel like I have lived many different lives. I have thought about the people that I grew up with- I have wondered where their lives have taken them. John Muir, "Lincoln", Willard, West Campus, and BHS. Cecily (Batey) Caceu lives in Portland; we are still good friends after all of those years. I am a Pastry Chef in Honolulu- I spent a lot of time in many restaurants and hotels in CA, HI (and in Belgium and France). I have always ended back in Hawaii- this time to stay, I am tired of moving. 17 years here (total), I really love Hawaii. I don't get back to Berkeley very often. My parents moved to Mendocino when they retired. I do miss the Berkeley Bowl! Have a great reunion, if you are ever in Honolulu- say "Hi".

Hello to one and all! Memories of BHS: Bruce Lee and the Kung Fu craze; Disco; the sweet lyrics of Earth, Wind & Fire; sunny daze sitting in front of the school people-watching; trying to fit in; trying not to fit in; studying?; long hair; too much introspection; last but not least, friendships. Sometimes I wake up and I feel like that kid in high school again....however, as the years roll by, these feelings arise less frequently. After graduation, I really thought I was going to take the "road less traveled" but as fate would have it, my life has been conventional: graduated from UC Berkeley, earned an MBA, happily married for 16 years, 2 kids, a boy and girl, a dog....and so on. Life has been good. I hope that your "road" has lead you to a good one as well. I have not kept in touch with anyone from my class but I have run into a few people now and then. I might be away on business during the reunion but if not, I will try to attend. I am not sure anyone will remember me but I do recognize some of the names here - Zerda Paige, Mindy Scharlin, Matt Watson, Michael Poe, Connie Lim, Larry Becker, William Kumai. Take care....Peace & Joy Wei Huey

I have been teaching English in Japan since 1991--which makes it a bit difficult to attend reunions! I hope to be in Berkeley about the time of the reunion this time, however. Wherever I go, I always say, you can't beat the weather in Berkeley! Out where I am, near Nagoya in central Japan, the summers are hot and humid, often having the highest temperature in Japan, including Okinawa. I teach at a junior college; it's like being in high school every day!

I hope to make the 25th reunion. I can't believe that so many years have gone by. I've been married for 23 years and have 5 children--(3 birth, 1 adopted and 1 guardianship). My husband and I were foster parents for several years and at one time had 10 children. We have been very blessed. Our children have made us very proud. Our oldest son, age 21, is serving a mission for our church; our oldest daughter, almost 20, is attending college at BYU; our son that we will be adopting very soon, almost 18, will be attending college in the fall at BYU-Idaho; our second daughter, age 17, will be a Senior in high school this fall, and our "baby" is 10 and begins 5th grade. Even though I graduated in January 1977 and didn't attend the graduation ceremony due to my school schedule, I remember a great many of my high school friends. Berkeley is the city of my birth, childhood and early adulthood. It will always be home. I don't visit that often anymore as both of my parents have now passed away and the Berkeley home was sold. The high school has changed so much and definitely doesn't look the way it was when we were all there. Although we are all older now, nothing can take away the memories that we have of the "good old days" at Berkeley High School. I hope to make it to the reunion and see many of your faces-even though the old memory might make it a little difficult to recognize everyone. Take Care! PS Thank J Reeves for putting together the webpage and keeping everyone updated. Just to let you know, please correct the spelling of my maiden name--SEEGMILLER not SEGMILLER. I would appreciate it.

The website is fantastic. The reunion sounds very tempting. The names are very familiar. It was an exceptional time when we were at BHS (and elementary school, and JHS)and not everybody in the world shares those values that were instilled in us. In some ways, I think all the work I do is to recreate some of the feelings of the communities I experienced at that time. Living happily ever after for the most part in Brooklyn married to the guy who played tenor sax next to me in the BHS jazz band (Tony Jones), have a wonderful 10-yr old son and 19-yr-old stepdaughter (BHS alum). Maybe I will make the reunion, but I'm supposed to be working at Cazadero Music Camp that week (for like, the 20-somethingeth yr). If we dont catch you then, our band is playing at Yoshi's in Oakland on August 26th. Come by and say hi. Thanks for all your work on the site, and everyone's honesty and shout outs.

I returned to the United States in 1999 after having lived in Japan off and on for about 10 years. I dated my husband, Neal for 6 years before we were married; we've now been together 22 years. I have a daughter, Jasmyn who is 6 1/2 months old and a son , Jordan, who is 2 1/2 years old. Wow, how long did that take? Days after Jasmyn's delivery I had a significant stroke that left me with hemiparesis and caused me to have a left craniotomy. For the past six months I have been in physical and occupational therapy. We are praying for a full recovery. I do alot of reading and writing these days, so please correspond with me when you have a moment. While I was in Asia, I taught English, was a research assistant in Government Relations for United States Forces, Japan and a myriad of other positions. Just before I became ill, I was working as a medical financial management specialist. I really do regret having missed the reunions when I was physically able to travel. Mary (C), my dear, please shore up your courage and attend one. Peace and Love, My Sister. P. S. Email me off line

oops, I forgot!

Great site James, thanks so much for the hard work! I am sure that many of my classmates have grown children, but I am proud to announce that I just had a son three weeks ago!! With my daughter who is turning three in July, that makes me one very tired but HAPPY lady. I am moving to Palo Alto in August 2002 for my husband's one-year sabbatical. So I will DEFINITELY make the 25th reunion! I was a molecular biologist until 8 years ago, then got hired by a patent law firm and they sent me to evening law school while I worked by day. NOW I'm a biotech patent attorney. Funny where the road leads. My husband is also a molecular biologist who teaches and does research. Can't wait to see my dear friends from BHS!

God has truly been good to me. I have been so blessed, and I owe it all to His awesome Grace. I look forward to attending the 25th class reunion. I have been blessed with a wonderful husband, and a daughter I never could have dreamed of. We live in San Diego, but our plans are to return to Berkeley soon, if it's God's will. My life has taken many turns, but now that I know it's not about me, but about spreading the word of God and how he can bring you from any situation. Thank you so much for having this web site, and I pray that we can all get together, laugh, cry and share what amazing things we have been through, and how through it all God is the only reason that we have made it this far. When I reviewed the list of people that are no longer with us, I can say, that could have been me, so I must tell of His wonderful Love, Power, and Grace that has watched over my life. God Bless you all, until we meet again.

I would have graduated from Berkeley High School if we hadn't moved away just before 5th grade! I am wondering if any of you knew Abby Bellah. She was my best friend in Elementary School. I know she died in a car accident, but I would like to know more about this and what she was like. My maiden name is Karen Len. I have a twin by the name of Kathy. We also had a good friend who's name is Phoebe. Anyone know of her? Thanks for any replies.

One more thing.....We lived across from the Strawberry Canyon pool on university property. I heard this area was made into a toxic waste dump. Is this true? It was such a beautiful place to grow up. It was the poultry department when we were there. Anyone know what this looks like now? Is the building at the bottom of the hill still there? I know our house was torn down....a beautiful old house.

I've been living in DC for 19 of the past 25 years, and don't get back to Berkeley all that often. I'm making plans right now to be there for the 25th. I have not been to the website since the 20th reunion but now have a smile on my face after reading through the guest book. Eddie Farris told me about the upcoming 25th. I have a "what a small world" story for those of you who went to Willard Jr High. My wife, Marie Parket Watson, works as a counselor at the High School where we live. This year one of the new teachers who joined the staff at the High School was Jim MacLemore(sp?) who taught at Willard when we went there. Of course Marie took in the old yearbooks to kid Jim about the length of his hair back in '72 but she tells me he looks like he has not aged in the 30 years since. Looking forward to the 25th.

Although I have been a visitor to this web site before, I feel particularly motivated to write you now from Hanoi. I recently took a job as the Project Manager for the Center for Educational Exchange with Vietnam. CEEVN is a not for profit organization whose mission is to work with Vietnamese people to identify educational issues and priorities, and develop academic programs and relationships important to them and their institutions. I find this work particularly gratifying because of what was happening in Vietnam while we were school mates in Berkeley. Years and years later, there have been significant changes in Vietnam and even though the memories of the 70's are present, with courage and conviction, the country is moving on and confidently taking its place on the world stage - and it's great to be here to witness this. My time is Vietnam is open - it could be anywhere from 7-12 months. I welcome the chance to host anyone in Hanoi who may be passing through Asia. Drop a line if you plan to be in the area or if you'd be interested in sharing similar experiences you may have had. Best Wishes to all, and I hope to see many of you next year, Eric Arndt

The wings of love communicate, the butterfly, a short lived fate But O what love did generate the beauty of this flight. On our path we walk alone, the years float by, were did we go? And was it love that made us grow? for time waits for non not one of all. And than. The path of light appears. This hand of love was allways here. The time we spent was so unclear (time cheeted us this way) So I take this Hand of Bright Shinning Love. and it guides me to a place above where the fields are filled with time and butterfly's abound...

What an interesting trip down memory lane--and how nice to see so many familar names. I promised James Reeves I'd contribute my info, so here it is in a nutshell: After juggling a day job and a career as an artist after Cal, I went back to grad school and got a Ph.D. in Art History. I'm now on the faculty at Santa Clara University in the Department of Art and Art History. SCU is right next door to San Jose and it is nice to be back in the Bay Area after living in Los Angeles for so many years. My companion of the last 18 (!) years is an architect with his own practice--still located in LA--so we trade off weekends in Northern and Southern California. I hope people keep contributing to this site, and Kudos to James for providing us with a place to meet in cyberspace. Finally, Phil Wright, if you are out there, drop me a line. --Andrea

It's 11 days past the reunion and I continue to think about it with a smile and a laugh. I asked my brother if he had a good time and he said, "the best part was watching you and Susan revert back to the giddy highschool girls you once were". I don't remember feeling giddy but I do remember the rush of memories, the excitement of seeing everyone and knowing I was smiling from ear to ear. Thanks to the committee for all the hard work and efforts. It was a fabulous evening, I enjoyed spending part of it with Mr. and Mrs. Parker. It made it extra special with them joining us. Sitting at their table, I was able to see people I may have missed and meet people I had never met in highschool. I am looking forward to helping with the 25th and seeing everyone again. We have a terrific class.

It was great fun to see old friends again and come up with those old '70's memories. I'm looking forward to the 25th!!! (P.S. Mindy, it was great fun talking with you last night!!!!)

As a committee member I can say that I was truly proud of what we were able to accomplish. It was so wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves. I want to personally thank my fellow commitee members for all of their hard work and effort, It paid off. I would also like to thank everyone who attended, because you were the one who really made it a success. I feel a little sad, I will miss our Saturday morning meetings. Looking forward to the 25th.. In the meantime my best wishes to all.

I had a great time at the reunion! I just wish it has lasted longer and I could have talked with more people. 20 years really does change people. Wow! If anyone wants to stay in touch just come by my store in Alameda. It's a great place to hang out on the weekend and get pastries and coffee and then go for a bike ride or walk along the waterfront. The name of my business is Why Cook? located in the Harbor Bay Landing shopping center just 2 miles from the Oakland airport. Now I know everyone has to go to the airport, so just stop on by!

How the years just melted away and everything seemed so deja'vu if only for a few short days (or was it just a few short hours?). The reconnections made with dear old friends, some lost for all these twenty years but not to be lost again. Thanks James, for making this event so hands-on and personal with this heartfelt web page (can't wait for the pics to show up!)...Hey Heidi, thanks for looking me up and making the trek back to Berkeley, bringing Gordy, Barb, Lori and Marg back too... the true highlight of this wonderful reunion!...Warren, my oldest friend, singlehandedly resposible for bringing me to BHS in the first place, still the same after all these years (thank goodness!)...Looking forward already to the 25th, how about we all redouble our efforts to bring the rest of the lost gang (John Heller?, Dan Shugrue?, George Doherty?)...better yet let's just crash the 1978 reunion...we'll probably find them there anyway! Well as we used to say on the steps...later...MUCH!! Alan Odom

Those who missed the reunion must be wondering if it was really that great. You know how many people like to exaggerate? Well like anything else in life it wasn,t perfect! In fact neither was the picnic! Who am I kidding? If you really want to know what it was like you had to be there and if you were you would have found that it was truly a great event!!! The only thing that kept it from being perfect were those we missed who didn,t show up. Don,t miss the 25th!!!

Hi all, just wanted to say that I really enjoyed myself at the reunion. It was great to see all of my old classmates(no pun intended). It made me feel very proud when a variety of professions were read off that some of us were presently holding. It also put things into perspective when Michelle gave the message that no matter what lifestyle, profession, condition, or esteem problems individuals were having that should not be a reason of not attending the reunion, because that isn't what it was about. This was a very true statement. In passing, I would run into a few fellow classmates that had these very same comments and felt that because of these reasons they were not going to attend. I can only say to them now, YOU MISSED A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EVENT!!! To James, I want to gave a BIG THANKS!! This site is just great. To the reunion committee members, Did We MAKE SUCCESS HAPPEN Or What???? All of those early Saturday morning mtgs. and online chat mtgs. DID payoff!!! To Marcus, those t-shirts were a knock-out(get-it??)!!! Last of all, I want to thank the spouses of the reunion committee. This is for all of the patience that you had during our crashing of your homes : · )) Let's all keep in touch. Who knows, maybe we will have a TEENS of THE 70's dance in the future!!!

I don't know where to begin? So many wonderful things happened for me at the reunion! Seeing so many old friends, so many old memories; and then to see how everyone has matured so much! What a different experience from the 10th reunion and also from high school. There was such a wonderful feeling of everyone coming together without a care in the world for what profession you were in or where you lived or what economic strata you fit into......there was such of feeling of larger community and family. It was wonderful. Of course, there were so many people that I didn't have a chance to talk to at any length, but that gives me more incentive to get back in touch with them now. Thank you, to everyone, who came and enjoyed the evening with all of us. It was truly worth every minute we put into organizing it. Thank you for providing such a warm, safe atmosphere, to be honest and open during my presentation. It is always easy to tell the truth when you speak from the heart! And a very special thanks to James Reeves, who has provided this web site for all of us to keep in touch. Without James.......the 20th reunion would have been a whole lot different for many of us! Thanks. And to everyone else, keep writing in!

To view twenty-four years in one's life in a few short hours, surounded by the new faces of old hearts, trying to say hi to all,not knowing who is missing, hidden or lost-who wrote the rules here? Wonderful is an understatement and fantastic is a downplay! Words will not work here, just hearts. THE REUNION WAS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EVENT THAT I WOULD NOT HAVE MISSED FOR THE WORLD, BUT I ALMOST DID. IF NOT FOR THE FACT THAT I HAD A BABY SHOWER FOR MY WIFE ON THE VERY SAME DAY,AT THE VERY SAME HOTEL, AS THE REUNION,I WOULD NEVER HAD KNOWN.IF I HAD KNOWN EARLIER I WOULD HAVE TRIED TO LOSE WEIGHT AND GROW HAIR FOR THE EVENT :] . . . IT WAS STRANGE TO SEE ALL MY CHILDHOOD FRIENDS AS ADULTS. IN MY HEAD THEY LIVED ON AS I LAST SAW THEM. LOOKING AROUND THE ROOM I REALIZED THAT THESE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT SHAPED ME INTO THE PERSON I AM TODAY.I ONLY WISHED THE REUNION WAS LONGER...IF ANYONE WANTS TO CONTACT ME I'M AT HABNFUN@FLASH.NET {FYI HABNFUN ARE ALSO MY PERSONALIZED PLATES :]...

I'd like to echo Kirsten's comments... I had a great time this weekend and a chance to renew and make new friends. I'll be working on additions to the site soon, but first I need to recover! The one thing I know has changed is that I can no longer party as hard as I used to! Please check back here in the next few weeks for important reunion followup messages and information. Thanks to everyone that has made the reunion and this website a great experience... it really made me feel good to know how much people had appreciated this website... At the party I had several conversations that went like this, (leaning over, squinting at name tag) "Joe/Jane Smith! I remember you!" - "Hi, Scott... I remember you..." - Weren't we in Mr. Jones history class together?" - "Didn't take his class." - "King Jr. High?" - "I went to Willard" - "Hmmm..." Well, after one of these conversations with CARLA ARNOLD, and some head-scratching and year-book checking, I've figured out that we met freshman year at university (the one with palm trees and red tile roofs). There were only a handful of BHS grads in that class. -- Scott

Here we are the day after, and I would like to thank all of you who braved it enough to show up. After being completely out of touch for 20 years, it was a wonderful experience to see people and renew friendships. Prior to attending, I had honestly felt that it was not important that I attend, and that those years ago meant nothing in my current life. After the last two days, I feel that attending was a transcendental experiece. This will sound completely cliche, but that's ok: renewing these friendships allowed me to feel part of a larger community, of course brought the proverbial "closure" home to many old friendships, and also made me feel very happy and proud to see how everyone (including myself) has not only matured, but is a success in their own way. Thanks again, and I'll definately attend for number 25!

Best Wishes to all going this weekend... although I am unable to be there, I have enjoyed catching up people and plan to call upon some of you when I do make my next visit home - and home it will always be... Berkeley is a special place - one we can feel lucky and proud to have experienced at that moment in its history and as part our personal life journies. This weekend is for celebrating our pasts, friends and those high school experiences captured as vivid memories - things which conrtibute in many ways to who we are today. Enjoy the time together and the opportunity to reflect.

We've been out 20 years already? Wow, how time flies. Anyway, I recently injured my back and, as a result, I will not be at the 20th reunion. I had planned to be there and am very disappointed I won't make it now. Twenty year old "hellos" to any BHS friends that still remember me! If anyone wants to get in touch, my home phone number is 303 499-6717. The rest of my family is still in the Berkeley area and I usually visit about once a year. I guess I should mention that I'm still single (but in a long term relationship) and am employed as a biochemical engineer working on biofuels production at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. How sad to see the "In Memory" site. A big dose of mortality, yes? Just found your site tonight, was unaware of the reunion. Countess Williams told me about it ont he telephone tonight. I have to fly down to LA on Thursday, and hope to have dinner with her and catch up. Don't think I will be able to attend the reunion at such late notice, but it was very nice to read everyone else's virtual commments in the guest book. Sounds as though many of you have not left the bay area. I love to travel, but always enjoy coming home. Even with all the changes (the traffic!!!), we still enjoy stunning vistas, weather, food and adventure. Enjoy the reunion!

Who????? made up all of those names mentioned by Matt Watson? Matt, Jeff Houston, and John Laetsch were the quick minds behind some of these mostly benign creations. I'm not sure many people will recognize all of them--any clues?. In fact, I've never heard of Chimney, Peli, Kagdog, and Snappy (or were you just making those up to fill-in a few lines?). And, wasn't Magnet Back a generic name for a fish? Any additional names? We'll be thinking of you in Emeryville from this dusty part of I-80. Hope everyone has a a good time. Hi to everyone reading. Just thought I would check in as well. Is it me or does anyone else have 20 year old images of the email authors? These people are in their late 30's, but I'm picturing them at 18! Of course this could be a good thing, or a bad thing. So, to update you on my image... my hair is rapidly thinning, my nose is bigger (why is that?), and what I thought were real cool oblique muscles turned out to be fat love handles that keep shaking when I run. Becky Chambers' eariler email gave me an idea, so I started snooping a bit. Here are some facts half way through senior year, on Jan. 28, 1977: The Dow Jones opened at 954.54.....A new Toyota pickup was $3,488.....A Datsun 280Z was going for $7,450.....A 4 bdrm house in the Thousand Oaks area was selling for $85,000; a BIG house in the Claremont Hills was 175,000..... Movies: Playing at the California, The Enforcer; at the UA 4 was King Kong; at the Oaks Theater was Rocky.....In the music stores: Earth, Wind, & Fire - Spirit; Boston - Boston; The Jacksons - The Jacksons; Loggins & Messina - The Best of Friends. Of course there's lots of stuff to add about TV, sport, world news, etc. but this is getting long. Finally, here's something maybe others can add to about BHS: Favorite Class: Mr. Houck's CA History Favorite Teacher: John Martinez - by a long shot Most Useful Class 20 Years Later: Typing!! (PC's, who knew?) Best Memory: Too many to list! (yeah I know..sappy) See you on the 18th.

Hey, just checking in again befor the actual event. Does anybody know if there will be many attendees from the School of the Atrs or MSA? Just wondering who's going to show up. Erin- I know just what you mean about pants with the crotch at the knees, sometimes I can't even imagine what is holding these kids pants up! Though I have to say I can remember wearing pants that were soo tight I could barely zip them up. From one extreme to another? I'm living in Oakland with my partner and our dog (a weimaraner), Berkeley these days has gotten just a little too P.C. for me, but I love living in the Rockridge district in Oakland- the quintessential "Urban Village". Looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion. Just like at the prom, my "date" will be Laura Gorton West. Yeah, we still get together, though not as often and things somehow don't usually come with the high sense of the dramatic that they always seemed to have when we were young and naive. Hope we have a great turnout. Eric

Briar - don't crash Grizzly and Shasta - I heard their folks aren't out of town after all. Try us in Emeryville, instead - we can do the bumb and brick house and funkify if you're still a young man, "baby" "ohhhohhhh". Larry Becker - Nebraska is not too far away. I wish you were coming. You know how I know it's been 20 years? I hate pants with the crotches hanging down to the knees, and none of them want to work that hard, and piercing the tongue looks masochistic. See, I sound old. But I've got the same spirit. I'm married, no children, have 2 german shepherd dogs who are smarter than some of my friends and we are doing search and rescue work with them. I still am constantly on a spiritual path, meditate, live one day at a time, love poetry and dancing . . . and the best news of all - all the donahues are turning out great - marrying great partners and having little ones. I feel quite blessed. Will be great to see everyone. Erin

Reading all the comments below, I just had to jump in one last time! I see a number of familiar names -- Barbie Ruskin, and also Heidi Farwell, who checked in all the way from Kauai (Barbie and Heidi, remember partying on that Kauai beach in '77 with Eric Rymland? I don't blame you for going back, Heidi!) I also see Tim McElheney and Kent McCue: Hello to my former Buena Vista Way neighbors! ... Though I won't be attending the reunion, I've been having a grand old time reuniting online with a few of you BHSers -- Julian Henkin, Simone Otus (I just got your baby announcement for Tench Mahmut Coxe -- congrats, girl!), Jennifer Cobb, Larry Becker, and John Laetsch. I hope we all stay in touch; in the meantime, don't let that old married man Chris Casimere slouch off on attending (Mindy, will you make sure of it for me?), and may you all have a rip-roaring, hide-the-silverware, won't-see-nothing-like-it-'til-our-50th-reunion party! I absolutely plan on being there for that one. I'll be the one with the white hair turning up the volume on the Ohio Players (what a thought). Warmest regards, Becky Chambers. P.S. I completely missed the 10 year one, but I'm psyched about year 20. Thanks to the committee member for putting this together. It'll be great! I'm still on the radio, though I just gave up my early morning show on KPFA, I'm on 91.7 KALW San Francisco Saturday Afternoons as the announce on duty ("stay tuned for all things considered") and my little folk music show, "A Patchwork Quilt" at 4pm. And you know what they say to us artistic types (musicians, actors, public radio dj's), "Don't Give Up Your Day Job". I'm 15 years at Cody's Books, now opening a new store on trendy 4th Street, where I'll be taking books out of boxes and putting them on shelves in time for the grand opening in November. I'll see you-all later! Love, Kevin

Has it really been 20 years? Rip Van Winkle wouldn't have missed a thing. How wonderful to hear from all you beautiful people. I'll be in Italy during the month of October, but I wanted to let you know that I'm still here. Hi to Eric Arndt and Mark Williams. Has anyone kept in touch with Jim McKinney? Much love and laughter on the 20th reunion.

I agree that the price of the event ticket is steep for some and the committee discussed quite a bit. But, that's why we included the potluck picnic so those that couldn't come to Sat. event could come Sun. That's what happens when you sponsor an event like this and don't have much seed money Sorry.

Hi again. Just got my invitation to the party in the mail, and I wanted to coment about the price. I personally don't have a problem with it, since I currently have a good job, but I worry about some of our peers who might not be doing so well. This would exclude them based on income, and it doesn't seem fair. I understand that it costs a lot to put on something like this, so I was wondering if there would be some way to make allowances. Whaddaya think, organization committee?

Rachel Davis · Walnut Creek, CA · Sunday, August 10, 1997 at 12:10pm · email hidden

It has only been five years since the last one, right? Time flies with work, kids and other family matters and you don't remember that it has been 20 YEARS! since high school. This a great website to check out. I'm seeing names that I have not seen in a long time. I have talked with Chris Comfort and he is planning to come to the reunion. Does anyone know the whereabouts of one Oscar Bradley ?

Hey guys ... I'm not from you rclass, school, city or state but I am organizing our Class O' 77 reunion here in Austin, TX. Got any good ideas? We are planning a 70 fashion show and awards. I think this site is great. Good luck! And "Oh Thank Heaven for the Class of '77"! (Hey, it was the 70s ... what do you expect?)

Anonymous · Austin, TX · Thursday, August 7, 1997 at 4:34pm

Thank you James for creating this web site. It is incredible to think that we graduated 20 years ago. I look forward to catching up on the lives of many high school friends with whom I have lost touch. Yes, my married name is the same as my maiden name, just spelled differently!

Ann Wolff (formerly Wolfe) · Mountain View, CA · Thursday, August 7, 1997 at 5:20pm · email hidden

This is really too cool. I can't believe it has been 20 years already! I dont feel (eek!) almost 40... Ellen, James - great to hear that you're still around! I will be at the reunion - wouldn't miss it for the world, so will Heidi, trying to convince the guys it would be fun... but not being BHS grads... Look forward to seeing all of you in October!

Virtual Yellowjackets... Glad I finally took my old pal Dennis Brown's advice and visited this website... Any other alums barking up the writing/filmmaking/theatre/comics/interactive, etc., & et al. trees? Maybe we should form some kinda arts caucus and help each other along... (I actually got a theatre piece out of our 10 yr. reunion, which I workshopped down here in L.A. -- these reunion things are *redolent*!)... Expatriated down here for awhile, married & parenting and missing the north -- which I don't get to visit often enough... Looking forward to our double--decade rendezvous! Cheers...

Just wanted to let folks know that I have been in touch with Russell Barnett, Scott Hansen, Karen San Martin, Alison (Dundes) Renteln and Paul Renteln. They will spread the "reunion word" to those they keep in contact with. I also "saw" Marilyn Adamson and the mother of Jason Winett, but unfortunately I wasn't able to make contact with either of them. Guess that is what happens when one doesn't leave Berkeley!

Mindy Scharlin · Berkeley, CA · Wednesday, July 23, 1997 at 9:28pm · email hidden

James, thanks lots for taking the initiative to create such a sight that so many are enjoying. Looks great! I'm an active committee member and am plugged into the details. Expecting a great turnout and events (including picnic). Everyone help spread the word and ensure the reunion success. It will take us all to create that success. Look forward to seeing many of you in October. For those of you who can't make it stay in touch and you can order t-shirts, memories books and still be included. Enjoy your day!!

Wow, I was looking at our yearbook today- sure doesn't seem like that was twenty years ago! I remember us as having really wild hair and fashions, but to me today we look like normal kids. Of course our jeans were tight, not baggy like today, but hey, fashions change. I'm welcome to hearing from others who were at BHS in the seventies, at the time I couldn't wait to get out, but looking back now, twenty years later, they were some pretty good times. As they say "youth is wasted on the young". To Steve from Australia: yes, I know the whereabouts of both Charles McNeal and Laura Gorton now Laura West. If you wish to contact them, please e-mail me, as I don't have e-mail addresses for them to give you. Eric Warren

I'm class of '75, actually, but I see there are a few other non-'77 folks here so I guess I'm eligible. Love to see some of us from'74, '75, '76 post, too. A L S O : If enough of you from any of these classes have AOL addresses, maybe we can set up a chatroom now and then, and have some virtual mini-reunions. AOL isn't good for much, but that's one thing we could take advantage of. Anyway, if you DO have an AOL address or know of a classmate who does, please post it here. Or feel free to email me. It would be fun to be reminded of some of those old familiar (and unfamiliar) faces.

I guess I'm the first non-'77 to register ('76). I like the idea of a multi-year reunion. I got a shock when I turned to the In Memory page. Will someone please tell me what happened to Phil Agratelis? I hadn't known. Some other familiar names too but I'll have to think harder. Phil I knew from jazz band. He was top notch.

Always wistful, sobering, but usually sweet to visit the BHS 77 message board -- sobering, certainly, to learn news about the passing of classmates -- Suki's cancer, Paul's suicide -- and thinking of being about half the way towards home plate (the Giants are doing well, let's use a baseball metaphor) at this point in life... My partially Bay Area-set "Danger Boy" books are coming back out next year froma new publisher, where the series will also be continued (more at www.dangerboy.com for the truly curious), had one marriage come and go, and my primary blessings are my own two "danger boys," ages 9 & 4. And I never get back to the Bay Area often enough, given how I miss it. A couple other pieces of business here, by request from Dennis Brown, the original Happy Man (apologies to Greg Kihn): He wants me to let everyone know he can be digitally contacted by text message, by going to www.arch.com and entering this number: 510 345 0336. You can then fire away up to a couple hundred words, if you want to say howdy. Also, Dennis is promulgating the idea of a combined '76 - '77 - '78 class reunion next time out, a couple/three years down the road... (by which time we sure as hell better have someone else in the White House!) happy trails, all... --Mark
